Three failures at 1.92 meters meant she stayed at 1.88 – and that was not enough to return to the National Arena and jump for the medals.
It feels sad not to be able to perform, but it's also my first World Championship. I'm only 20 years old and I see many World Championships ahead of me, I can be proud to come here, she says.
But it's sad, I had seen myself in the final.
Nilsson cleared 1.83 in the first jump and passed 1.88 in the second attempt. If she had cleared 1.88 in the first one, she would have been in the final.
It makes the situation worse, extra tough. It was exactly like that for me during the Junior World Championship last year.
The bronze in the indoor European Championship in the Dutch Apeldoorn was a surprise for all parties involved. The jump that took Nilsson to the podium made the national team captain Kajsa Bergqvist call the 20-year-old a "super talent".
- I think it's the most sensational medal in modern athletics history, she said in connection with the championship in the spring.
The medal was secured by being flawless up to and over 1.92 meters – which was then a personal record. Since the championship, she has continued to impress. 1.93 in Poland in June and 1.94 in Switzerland later in the same month.
But in Japan, Engla Nilsson did not reach as high.
For Ellen Ekholm, the qualification ended without her clearing a single height. She failed on the entry height 1.83. She was hair-fine close to clearing the first two attempts, but then failed grossly.
