The Employment Service has begun tracking the IP addresses of the unemployed in the pursuit of benefit fraud, reports Dagens Nyheter.

Since last summer, the authority has identified approximately 4,000 people who have registered as unemployed – and who at the same time seem to be abroad. The Employment Service now flags logins on its website with foreign IP addresses as suspicious.

It's a way to counter the risk of incorrect payments. We're talking about people who are abroad even though they should be in Sweden and look for work or participate in labor market policy programs, says Andreas Malmgren, operations controller at the Employment Service, to the magazine.

The decision to track IP addresses was made in June and so far none of the 4,000 people have been contacted. During the autumn, identified individuals will get a chance to explain themselves, before any measures are taken.

The consequence may be that they are not deemed to meet the right to compensation, says Andreas Malmgren.
