It was a long shot, but Emil Iversen, 34, grabbed one of the last two Olympic spots on Norway's men's cross-country skiing team.

Sprinter Oskar Opstad Vike, whose season was marked by illness and back problems, took second place.

The criticism of Norway's Olympic selection has mainly been about a lack of clarity and consistency in the selection criteria. Emil Iversen has had strong results this season and several podiums in the World Cup, but still did not get the go-ahead when several other skaters were selected earlier.

In this year's World Cup, Iversen has been on the podium three times and finished in the top five in five of his nine races. He already has four World Cup gold medals and an Olympic silver medal on his list of achievements.

Norway's men's team consists of eight skaters.

The first men's race in the Olympics is the skiathlon on February 8.
