Wester, one of the season's star newcomers, made her debut in championship contexts at this level. And how she did it at Estadio Vallehermoso.
Wester lowered her own personal best on 400 meters from 52.72 at the beginning of June to 52.32.
"Surprised"
Incredible conditions, almost windless. A bit warm but otherwise great. I was surprised by the time. I did not know how much I had, but there was some left, says the 19-year-old talent to SVT.
The personal record places Wester as shared fifth all-time on the Swedish list on the distance.
Carl Bergström struck on the men's 400 meters flat with an outdoor record and season's best with 45.38. It was enough for the eighth best time.
Roos stable over 19 meters
Fanny Roos showed continued stable form with three competition throws over 19 meters. Already in the first attempt, the ball reached 19.08 meters, whereupon she increased to 19.38 in the fifth round. Roos' third place contributed with fine points to the team result.
It feels like we have found a good "flow", a rhythm. I do not think so much about technique. It has worked well, says Roos to SVT.
Sarah Lahti took fourth place on 5,000 meters with a time of 16.03,45.
1,500-meter specialist Samuel Pihlström won his heat on 800 meters. 1.46,76 was just over a second above his personal best.
I felt that I had it under fairly good control and had forces left in the last hundred, he says.
Vidar Johansson contributed significantly to the team with a fourth place on 3,000 meters hurdles. 8.26,14 was the time.
I had to struggle early, but I feel endurance-wise strong. Then I wish I had a kick in me in the last 300, but there will be more races, says Johansson.
High jumper Melwin Lycke Holm stepped out of the triple jump pit after an acrobatic vault – and out of the competition with a personal best of 14.91 meters.
"In a good place"
Henrik Larsson struck with a season's best on strong 10,11 and a total fourth place on 100 meters.
Absolutely, I am in a good place and it's only June. The form should be peaked in September. This can be good, says Larsson, referring to the World Championship.
Julia Henriksson was three hundredths over her season's best on 11,24 and came ninth on the women's distance.
Vanessa Kamga threw the discus 57.04 meters as far as possible.
After Friday's events, Sweden is in eighth place. The Netherlands is leading. The European Championship continues on Saturday and ends on Sunday.
