Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have reached an agreement in an attempt to thaw relations between the two countries. Among other things, China will be allowed to export 49,000 electric cars to Canada with a reduced tariff of 6.1 percent, and Canadians will be allowed to visit China without having to apply for a visa.

The tariff rate on Chinese electric cars in Canada was 100 percent before the deal.

The countries' central banks have simultaneously agreed to renew a five-year so-called swap agreement to strengthen financial cooperation and promote trade and investment between the countries.

The deal stands in stark contrast to the icy relationship between the countries during Justin Trudeau's years as Canadian prime minister. The visit is the first by a Canadian leader to China in eight years.
