Ahead of Thursday's elections to the Faroe Islands' parliament, the Lagting, one of the big questions has been how to approach negotiations over the national union.

Five of the six parties in the current parliament have reached a national compromise on how to begin negotiations with the Danish government over the national union, political commentator Árni Gregersen tells Ritzau.

The right-wing party Fólkaflokkurin, which is tipped to win, is one of the five.

Denmark argues that it is up to the Faroese and Greenlanders to decide on independence. Compared with Greenland, the Faroe Islands, with a population of around 50,000, are much less dependent on financial support from the Danish state.
