Several thousand people gathered as around 80 organizations came together to put the climate on the agenda ahead of the election this fall - from the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation and Restore Wetlands to PRO and the Church of Sweden, under the slogan "Listen to the researchers - reduce emissions now".

The climate is actually our biggest problem right now, and it seems to have been completely ignored, I think, says Stina, 85.

Considering how important it is, it is outrageous that so little is being done, says Agneta, 84.

Bad conscience

Their group is one of many with elderly people on the train.

"It's tragic that this seems to be an issue for old people. We have a bad conscience about what we've achieved, but the young people should be here and act on their interests and show the politicians that this is a very important issue," says Lena, 78.

Martin Wadmark, climate expert at the World Wildlife Fund WWF, says that Swedes still see the climate as a priority when they measure it - but that the issue has fallen down the agenda after the years when "Fridays for Future", led by Greta Thunberg, held their largest demonstrations.

We don't really have that youth movement behind the issue today, and so it can feel like you don't see it as much, he says.

“Realize the seriousness”

The current government has had a lot of other things to think about, says Martin Wadmark, but the next government must prioritize the climate.

Because we know exactly what needs to be done and we have the means to do it. It's just not happening.

"You need to realize the seriousness and take action as soon as possible. Soon there will be consequences and you can actually be afraid of them. But for now I think there is time," says Wadmark.
