According to the Egyptian proposal, Hamas would release five living hostages, and Israel would in exchange allow humanitarian aid to Gaza and a week-long pause in the fighting, according to a source at the Egyptian authorities.
A Hamas source has stated that the terrorist-stamped group has "responded positively" to the proposal, without providing more detailed information.
The ceasefire was broken last week when Israel resumed bombing in Gaza and hundreds of Palestinians were killed. This followed Hamas rejecting proposals to extend the first phase of the ceasefire and release more of its hostages without negotiating phase two.
The Gaza war broke out after Hamas' large-scale attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, when over 1,200 people were killed and hostages were taken. The now-broken ceasefire began on January 19.
