Ecuador's former vice president, Jorge Glas, has on Monday been sentenced to 13 years in prison for corruption. He is deemed to have abused public funds in connection with the reconstruction after an earthquake.
Glas was arrested last year under notable circumstances, when Ecuadorian police stormed Mexico's embassy in the capital Quito where the ex-vice president was located. He had previously been convicted for his involvement in a corruption scandal involving a Brazilian construction company, which led to him seeking political asylum at the embassy.
The raid has received sharp international criticism, as embassies are protected under the Vienna Convention.
Jorge Glas was the country's vice president between the years 2013 and 2017.
