Trump's Tariff Pause Signals Shift, But Uncertainty Remains

SEB's senior economist Robert Bergqvist receives Donald Trump's message about a 90-day tariff pause for certain countries with "a certain relief" since it shows that the US President is reacting to the financial unrest. He simultaneously reminds that "nothing is set in stone" and that Trump can change his mind from one day to the next.

It is very welcoming that Donald Trump apparently reacts to what is happening in the world around us. Some have gotten the impression that he is completely tone-deaf, but I have had a very hard time believing that he would not react to what is now happening and what is being written about the tariffs, he says.

"Nothing is set in stone"

Robert Bergqvist believes that negotiations will now be held to reach an end to the trade conflict.

Then you'll see what these negotiations will lead to. Now we've seen, and even the White House has seen, the very serious consequences of this type of statement and decision. That is, the stock markets are falling sharply, interest rates are rising sharply, and people are starting to talk about recession and low economic growth in the US.

At the same time, he warns that "nothing is set in stone" when it comes to Donald Trump, and that it will take time to repair the damage that Trump's trade policy has inflicted on the economic system.

Even if you come to an agreement within these 90 days, there's nothing stopping him from deviating from it from one day to the next, says Bergqvist.

"Sandpit politics"

The American president announced on Wednesday evening, Swedish time, that the American tariffs on Chinese goods will be increased to 125 percent. Bergqvist describes the ongoing trade war between the US and China, with constant increases in tariffs, as "sandpit politics from both sides".

It's a bit of an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, which can only end in it being impossible to trade between these two countries. Right now, it feels like there's no end to the conflict, he says.
