Swedes sent a record number of packages containing used goods during the third quarter. At the same time, the percentage of returns was lower than ever, new statistics from transport companies show.

The third quarter saw the largest increase in e-commerce parcels since the pandemic. The increase was 17.4 percent compared to the same period last year to almost 55 million parcels, according to the industry association Transportföretagen's recurring surveys.

Above all, it is international parcels that are driving growth – up 39 percent – and these now amount to a quarter of all parcels. Domestic e-commerce shipments increased by eleven percent.

Second-hand packages via various marketplaces increased by 41 percent to 5.5 million at the same time.

Returns were at a record low. Eight percent of the goods purchased online were sent back to the supplier. According to the Swedish Transport Companies, this is due, among other things, to the fact that product groups with a low return rate, such as pharmacy products, cosmetics and Chinese low-cost goods, have been particularly strong in online shopping. The fact that online retailers have started to skip free returns is also having an impact.

The survey includes supplier companies such as Postnord, DHL, Bring, Budbee, Instabox and DB Schenker.
