The slow final in Budapest, Hungary, ended up being something completely different. Chance-filled, thrilling and emotional - and ended with a dramatic penalty shootout at the Puskás Aréna.
Most players kept their cool and were clinical from the penalty spot.
Until it was time for Arsenal's Eberechi Eze - who shot wide - and PSG's Nuno Mendes, whose penalty was saved.
But that wasn't where the final was decided.
When Gabriel sent Arsenal's fifth penalty over the bar, it was over.
PSG thus turned the tables on penalties and defended their Champions League title from last year.
I feel mixed emotions: excited and exhausted - everything. We are still champions for the second year in a row and we deserve it, PSG coach Luis Enrique said to Viaplay.
But it was a tough and difficult match. Arsenal played well.
Long road to title
The road to the title was long, however.
Already in the sixth minute, PSG were at a disadvantage when Arsenal's Kai Havertz - after a series of lucky bounces - made his way forward and thundered in the opening goal.
The Premier League champions, who won their first title in 22 years, then focused on standing tall, holding their shape and resisting. Something the English club managed gallantly for just over an hour. Then Cristhian Mosquera, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé equalised on penalties in the 65th minute.
A lot of emotions
The goal gave the reigning champions hope and the stands were emotional; some fans roared and others had tears of joy. Emotions then turned to nervousness as the final was decided on penalties.
A duel that PSG won.
It had been 20 years since Sweden was last represented in the men's final. The last time, in 2006, was when Henrik Larsson played a crucial role for Barcelona against Fredrik Ljungberg's Arsenal.
This time, Arsenal's Viktor Gyökeres was the Swedish presence. He started on the bench, was brought on in the 66th minute and was responsible for one of the London team's goals.
