Both emergency care centers are located in the capital area of Port-au-Prince. The attack occurred in mid-March, when a transport was attacked and shot at between the two centers.
"After this, the organization has made the difficult decision to withdraw from the two centers for at least three months," writes Doctors Without Borders.
The spiral of violence in Haiti is almost unchecked, with criminal groups controlling over 80 percent of the capital. Clashes between rival armed gangs have increased in recent weeks. The number of murders, rapes, and kidnappings is overwhelming. So far this year, according to the UN, over 1,500 people have been killed in various clashes between gangs and during interventions by security forces.
"The extreme suffering that the people of Haiti are subjected to makes this decision all the more heart-wrenching," writes Benoît Vasseur of Doctors Without Borders.
