The Equality Ombudsman (DO) believes a deaf couple was discriminated against by Region Skåne. A sign language interpreter was not available when the man was due to undergo surgery, and when he died his deaf wife was not contacted.

Instead of contacting the next of kin, the healthcare staff contacted a grandson and informed him of the death.

The same grandson had to assist with interpretation on the day the man was to undergo surgery. The Discrimination Ombudsman (DO) believes that the fact he received information via a sign language interpreter the day before the planned heart surgery was not sufficient, nor was the healthcare staff's attempt to communicate via video telephony on the day of the surgery.

The DO is demanding that the region pay a total of SEK 60,000 in discrimination compensation. If the amount is not paid, the DO may file a lawsuit against the region.
