When Swedes Johan Floderus and Saeed Azizi were released in exchange for Hamid Noury, who was convicted of war crimes, Ahmadreza Djalali was left behind in an Iranian prison. "I am still helplessly left behind with a constant risk of being executed," he says to SVT News in an audio recording.

Ahmadreza Djalali was a researcher at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm for eight years. He was arrested in Iran in 2016, accused of spying for Israel, and has been sentenced to death. In 2018, he became a Swedish citizen.

According to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M), the government tried to get Djalali released as well, but Iran does not recognize him as a Swedish citizen and refuses to discuss the case.

I was left in a terrible situation, with an immediate risk of being executed. It seems that I am considered a second-class citizen, due to my dual citizenship, says Djalali in the recording.

Djalali claims that his health is now deteriorating and that he suffers from, among other things, stomach ulcers, gallstones, and heart rhythm disturbances that could lead to cardiac arrest.

I appeal to the Swedish authorities to increase their efforts to bring me home, he says in the audio recording.
