How long is a typical hike?
On Wednesdays, we organise short hikes ranging from 8 to 12 kilometers. From March to October, we also offer medium hikes (13-17 km) and long hikes (18 km and up) on Sundays to places like Mälaröarna, Alvik, Hässelby, Bromma, Kungsängen, Norrtälje, and Södertälje. Additionally, during the summer, we have evening hikes that are usually up to 5 kilometers, where our leaders provide insights into Stockholm's districts.
We also have archipelago hikes using Vaxholm’s boats to visit well-known islands like Grinda, Finnhamn, Sandhamn, Svartsö, and Fjärdlång. These hikes are typically no more than 10 kilometers because the islands are small and long commutes. Beyond the local hikes, we organise two hiking trips annually, each accommodating about 55 participants. Members must register and are selected by lottery.
Do you need to be an experienced hiker to join your tours?
No, but you should have good fitness and be able to walk at a brisk pace (4 km/hour) on the long hikes, which can traverse challenging terrain with hills, roots, and stones. The shorter distances have easier terrain. If you're not an experienced hiker, it's advisable to start with the short or medium-length hikes. Most new participants opt for these manageable distances.
What equipment do you need to bring on a hiking tour?
Suitable hiking shoes for the season and a rucksack with food, drink, a sitting pad, and a camera. Dress according to the weather. Our leaders carry first aid equipment in case of any injuries.
Who is the typical hiker?
Among the roughly 20 participants in our hikes, most are retirees. While the majority are Swedes, we've also had hikers from Germany, Russia, and Iran.
Do you need a membership to join the tours?
Initially, you can join without being a member. However, if you start hiking regularly, we encourage you to become a member. Membership is required for archipelago hikes due to limited seats on the boats. The membership fee is 150 SEK per year.
Lastly, why should people try hiking?
Hiking is a wonderful form of exercise that combines physical activity, aesthetic enjoyment, and social interaction. You can't get this combination by cycling, running, or skiing. During the pandemic, hiking became almost my only social activity, and now hiking on Sundays is so essential to me that 'a Sunday without hiking is not a real Sunday.' It's also very rewarding to meet people with diverse and interesting life experiences.
