But victories in the playoff matches against Ukraine and Poland secured Sweden's place at the World Cup and gave Sweden renewed championship hopes.
According to Aftonbladet, the former Chelsea coach has a salary on par with former Swedish national team head coaches - far from the sums he was used to in the Premier League, where he earned around 150 million kronor per year.
Instead, his pay is performance-based, with a bonus in the event of World Cup advancement - a bonus the 50-year-old can now collect.
