The defense agreement with the USA was signed in 2023, before Donald Trump was re-elected as president and began pushing again to make Greenland American.
The agreement gives the USA the opportunity to station soldiers and store defense equipment on Danish soil.
"It is the government's opinion that Denmark's participation in international cooperation agreements and programs in the defense area is crucial for Denmark's, the Nordic countries', and Europe's security and safety. The USA is our most important ally and a key part of the NATO alliance", it states in the bill, which is to be treated by the Folketing for the first time on April 11.
On Friday, Vice President JD Vance, accompanied by his wife Usha Vance, will arrive in Greenland to visit the American military base Pituffik, previously known as Thule Base.
Trump claims that Greenland is necessary for the USA's national security and has said that the USA will go as far as necessary to get Greenland. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) has protested against what she calls unacceptable pressure on Denmark and Greenland, and Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen (V) believes it involves "hidden threats".
The agreement cannot be terminated during the first ten years. After that, it can be terminated unilaterally with one year's notice. This does not apply to the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
