"Deepfake" is realistic manipulated images and video clips created with AI. Now the political majority wants to change the law to stop that type of material.

The law change, which is not expected to be presented until winter, is about two different protections. Partly, a protection mechanism will be created that protects people from sharing "deepfakes" that people have not given consent to. Artists and performers will also be protected against "sharing of realistic, digitally generated imitations" of their works without their consent.

Parodies and satire will be exempt from the change. Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmid has previously said that it is primarily up to the courts to assess how it should be defined, but that everyone should see that it is a joke.

There should not be a threat of fines or imprisonment for those who spread the content. Instead, media where the material is published will receive fines if they do not remove it.
