The Democratic Congressman Brendan Boyle calls the decision "ruthless, indefensible, and a direct threat to our national security".
"This support was approved by Congress with the backing of two parties – both Republicans and Democrats realized that supporting Ukraine is supporting democracy and standing up to Putin's aggression", Boyle writes in a statement.
"Yet Trump, who has repeatedly praised Putin and undermined our allies, is now playing political games with vital military support", he continues.
"Blackmail"
His party colleague in Congress, New York Democrat Dan Goldman, says that the pause in support for Ukraine is "yet another blackmail" of Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump was impeached about five years ago, when he was accused of pressuring Ukraine's government to achieve personal political gain.
This is the exact opposite of peace through strength. Instead, it's yet another blackmail of President Zelensky, illegally withholding aid to get President Zelensky to agree to a mineral deal, says Goldman.
Several other Democrats also express their disapproval. So does Republican Susan Collins, who is a senator for the state of Maine.
This is a critical time for Ukraine. I don't think we should pause our support, she says to CNN and adds:
It's the Ukrainians who are bleeding.
Supporting Trump
Republican and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene was one of the first to publicly back Trump's decision.
"I stand behind President Trump's decision to pause American arms deliveries to Ukraine. President Trump is working to achieve peace and to stop the daily slaughter of thousands in the war", she writes on X.
Several American media outlets reported during the night to Monday, Swedish time, that the US President had decided to pause all military aid to Ukraine. This came after Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky got into a heated argument on Friday, when Zelensky visited the White House to sign a mineral deal with the USA.
