Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) says the government is inviting the parties to join a new defense committee to consult on continued rearmament.

The Defence Committee's task will be to consult on how to strengthen and advance the rearmament that the Riksdag decided on in the Defence Decision 2024.

"I also foresee that the Defence Committee will work on the further development of civil defence," Jonson says.

Following the 2024 Defence Decision, the parties agreed in June 2025 to borrow SEK 300 billion to expand and accelerate rearmament to reach NATO's new goal of defence investment equivalent to five percent of GDP by 2035.

The Defence Committee will now decide how the money should be used. For example, the Armed Forces have pointed to the need for long-range missiles capable of striking targets inside Russia.

The Defence Committee, to be appointed at the end of January, will also develop a position on what Sweden should pursue when NATO develops its upcoming requirements for the military capabilities Sweden and other NATO countries must have. This process is expected to start in NATO in 2027.
