7–5, 6–1 against Mikael Ymer in the opening singles in Davis Cup was for most a routine victory. Not for de Minaur.

Mikael has always been a tough opponent and an incredible player. He was very hard to beat.

I had to bring out something from my best game to beat him. It's always a fight against him. He's a tough opponent with a great attitude, says the Australian who recently reached the quarterfinals in the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The world number eight was aware that Ymer had just made a comeback after an 18-month suspension – but not surprised by the level the Swede maintained.

No, I know his level. He will always be a tough opponent. I couldn't take it easy against him in any way.

And then there were the balls.

They didn't have the same pressure as I'm used to. I missed many shots that normally would have landed inside. It made it hard to know how aggressive I should be or how cautious. I'm satisfied with how I handled it, says Alex de Minaur.
