The Jamaica Public Service Company, the country's sole energy supplier, said the power outage began at 9 p.m. on Friday and affected the country's 2.8 million residents.
The company's CEO, Hugh Grant, said on Saturday the cause of the power outage was under investigation. The likely cause was lightning strikes near switchgear and transformer stations - which affected the power grid.
Jamaica rarely experiences power outages for economic or political reasons, unlike neighboring Cuba. However, severe hurricanes, such as Melissa last October, have previously caused total power outages.
