The oil drilling concerns the three fields Tyrving, Breidablikk and Yggdrasil off the coast of Norway. The permits have been challenged by the environmental organizations Greenpeace and Natur og ungdom, which filed a complaint in 2023.
Previously, a lower court had withdrawn the oil extraction permit, which was in turn appealed by the Norwegian Ministry of Energy.
The climate and emissions consequences of the combustion of oil from gas fields have not been sufficiently examined or evaluated, the Court of Appeal Borgarting lagmannsrett finds.
"The fight for the climate has been taken seriously. Now we expect the political leaders to follow this decision and end (planning) of these oil fields once and for all," writes Sigrid Heddevik Losnegbard, who chairs the organization Natur og ungdom, reports Norwegian NRK.
As we read the judgment, the Supreme Court demands new and stricter requirements in investigation and case processing than those currently in force, says government representative Gøran Østerman Thengs to NRK.
