More information has started to come forward about the victims of the double murder in Washington DC, where two people were shot dead. A 31-year-old who is suspected of the crime shouted "free Palestine" in connection with the arrest.

Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Milgrim, 26, had met during their work at the Israeli embassy, and according to BBC Lischinsky had recently bought an engagement ring and planned to propose to Milgrim during a trip to Jerusalem a week later.

Lischinsky grew up in Germany and moved to Israel before coming to Washington DC, where he had worked for two years at the Israeli embassy's political section. On social media, he was engaged in the release of the people taken hostage by Hamas in connection with the terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023.

Milgrim originated from Kansas in the USA and volunteered in Israel before starting to work at the embassy in Washington, shortly after the 7 October attack.

Jakub Klepek, a friend of Lischinsky from his study time at Reichman University in Israel, tells CNN that Lischinsky believed in the Abraham Accords (between Israel and several Arab countries) and "was engaged in seeking peace in the Middle East".

Sarah Milgrim's work at the embassy involved coordinating group trips to Israel. She was also a volunteer for an interest group aimed at promoting dialogue between young Israelis and Palestinians in the tech industry.

Corrected: In an earlier version of the text, misleading formulations about the couple's plans for engagement occurred.
