The 26-year-old who murdered ambulance paramedic Helena Löfgren has been sentenced to 18 years in prison. The prosecutors and the relatives had requested a life sentence. My clients and I are not entirely satisfied with that. We believe that an act like this should result in a life sentence, says defense attorney Sarah Moghadasi.

However, it is too early to say whether the verdict will be appealed by the plaintiffs.

We will have reason to return to that when we have had time to sit down in peace and quiet and talk through this, she says.

Prosecutor Elin Källberg says that the district court has shared the prosecutors' view on how to view the incident, apart from the question of punishment.

"That's where the district court has landed in a different assessment. We have to reason and think about it, whether this verdict should be appealed or whether we should be satisfied with the district court's assessment," says Källberg.

Better protection

The man had attacked an ambulance nurse at the same address with a baseball bat just three days before the murder. However, Helena Löfgren and her colleague did not have that information when they were called to the man's home.

The relatives hope that the incident can lead to better protection for blue light personnel in Sweden in the future.

"What is so incredibly tragic is that this information about the attack existed, but was not shared with Helena and her colleague. We believe that if such information is available, it should of course be shared with the personnel who are going on the emergency call," says Sarah Moghadasi.

Flagging

The murder has led to a debate about the safety of blue light personnel, with talk of introducing a system for flagging dangerous people, something that the relatives are positive about.

We think it is reasonable to introduce such a system, so that people do not unknowingly get into dangerous situations, like Helena did, she says.

The 26-year-old's lawyer had requested a prison sentence of less than 16 years. TT has contacted the lawyer for comment.
