At this time of year, last year's dead grass is exposed. It dries quickly and burns easily, and a spark can spread rapidly in the wind.

About 30 houses are damaged in grass fires each year, and an average of one person dies annually, according to MCF.

They are probably underestimated because they are quite easy to extinguish and do not cover a large area, but they can cause a lot of damage in a short time, says Jenny Sander, forest fire officer at the Swedish Civil Defence Agency (MCF).

Last weekend, SMHI also flagged a high grass-fire risk. On Friday, the risk is high to very high in Götaland and large parts of Svealand, the coastal areas of Norrland, and inland parts of southern Norrland. On Gotland, the risk is high.
