The government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the armed rebel group M23 have agreed to stop the fighting while they work towards a permanent ceasefire, the parties announced in a joint statement.

The surprising announcement comes after negotiations where Qatar was a mediator. It is not the first time something similar happens: More than six agreements on ceasefire have been entered into, only to collapse again, since 2021.

"Both parties confirm their commitment to an immediate cessation of hostilities", it is stated in the joint statement that has now been made public.

The mineral-rich eastern Congo-Kinshasa has been conflict-ridden for decades, but the situation has escalated in recent months since the rebel group M23 captured key cities.

UN experts and several Western governments accuse neighboring Rwanda of supporting M23, which Rwanda's government denies.
