Caroline Seger to be honored

The celebration has had to wait, but now it's clear when football star Caroline Seger will be honored for her 18-year long national team career. When the women's national team is to secure a spot in the European Championship at Tele2 Arena on December 3, the 39-year-old will be bid farewell.

Caroline Seger is, with her 240 appearances in the national team, the football player in all of Europe who has made the most national team appearances for her country.

Her last national team match was against Italy on October 31 last year. The midfielder retired from the national team after the Nations League match away against Spain in early December last year. Then she got no playing time, but was tearful when she was thanked on La Rosaleda Stadium in Málaga.

"Not doing it without Marika"

The idea was that Seger would be honored in connection with the European Championship qualifying match against Ireland in June this year, but when the long-time national team manager Marika Domanski Lyfors announced that she had been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, the tribute was postponed.

I don't want to do it without Marika, so I've told her that I'm waiting for her, said Seger to Aftonbladet.

Now the time has come for the tribute – it will take place on December 3 when the women's national team meets Serbia at Tele2 Arena in Stockholm.

"I'm looking forward to enjoying the atmosphere that the supporters always create", says Caroline Seger to the association's website.

"Nice to stop at the top"

Seger has previously said this year that she is in her last season, but when Rosengård secured the Swedish Championship gold in early October, the 39-year-old wavered about the future. Maybe it's just the end of the playing career in Rosengård.

It's nice to stop at the top, but I need to get to that place and feel that it's okay to leave football, said Seger then.

Against Serbia, the national team plays for a ticket to the European Championship in Switzerland this summer. The teams meet in Serbia on November 28 with a return match in Stockholm on December 3.
