Lemieux's daughter, Claudia Lemieux Bishop, writes in a press release that her father's brain will be used to investigate the long-term effects of repeated brain injuries.

"By having his name associated with this research, we hope that his life can contribute to greater understanding, more candid conversations and better protection for athletes and their families in the future," the statement said.

Claude Lemieux died on Friday in Palm Beach, Florida, at the age of 60. Authorities are ruling his death a suicide.

In total, Lemieux played nearly 1,500 NHL games during a professional career that spanned more than 25 years.
