The epidemic is spreading rapidly in the war-torn city, particularly since the water and electricity supply were knocked out in large areas in drone attacks attributed to the paramilitary RSF.

During the Wednesday day, 942 new cases were registered and 25 dead, the health department reports. The day before, 1,177 cases were registered and 45 dead – and the disease was confirmed to have claimed 172 human lives in the country as a whole last week.

According to Doctors Without Borders, who are on site in Sudan, the outbreak started in mid-May and in the area around Khartum, hundreds of patients have received care.

Last week, the Sudanese army claimed to have completely driven out the rebels in RSF from the capital region. The country's regular army has been fighting against RSF since April 2023. The rebels, who have declared their own political rule together with allied groups, have their stronghold in the vast Darfur region in western Sudan.

Cholera is a diarrheal disease caused by a bacterium. The disease spreads, among other things, through contaminated water or food.
