The area around the remains of the nuclear power plant in Chernobyl lost power on Wednesday due to Russia shelling a nearby transformer station, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The UN's atomic energy agency IAEA states that the power outage affected the structure surrounding the damaged reactor. A number of emergency diesel generators have been needed to supply the structure with electricity.

"Today, a Russian attack on one of our transformer stations in Slavutych caused a power outage that lasted for more than three hours at the former nuclear power plant", says Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyj on social media.

According to Zelenskyj, the power outage affected the new superstructure that was completed in 2016, and which protects the environment from radioactive dust.

"The facility quickly switched to alternative lines and the power was restored, with the exception of the new safe confinement, which covers the old sarcophagus built after the Chernobyl accident in 1986", states IAEA and adds that the diesel generators were used to supply that part of the facility with electricity as well.

It is unclear whether the generators will continue to be needed.
