The proposal is presented ahead of the Center Party's meeting in Karlstad in the middle of November, and means that the party board wants the parental insurance to become individual and divided in half between the guardians.
It's basically about creating economic equality between women and men, says Karin Ernlund.
Today, parental leave can be divided between parents in any way by transferring days to each other, but there are three earmarked months that cannot be transferred.
Ernlund expects the issue to create debate at the meeting. At previous meetings, the party board has not supported similar motions from members.
This is a discussion that has been in the party for a long time and has been dealt with at many meetings, she says.
In its motivation, the party board writes, among other things, that fathers' use of parental insurance is increasing all too slowly, something that they believe leads to negative consequences for both individuals and society.
"It's high time for further political measures in the form of individualization of parental insurance," writes the party board.
The party board also wants it to be investigated whether it should be possible to assign a smaller part of the days to another close relative and how the child's best interests should be protected if one of the guardians, for "different heavy or compelling reasons", cannot take out their parental benefit.
