Sweden has entered into an agreement with Estonia to rent space for up to 600 convicted criminals in the prison in Tartu, due to the lack of space in Swedish prisons. But before the plans of the Tidö parties become a reality, the Riksdag will take a stand on the issue this spring – and there is currently a lack of support.
The Centre Party – which previously opposed the plans – is now open to voting yes, after visiting the prison and carefully reviewing the proposal.
Right now, we have an acute situation for Swedish institutions, with a significant shortage of prison places. Then we must be prepared to, for a shorter period and in exceptional cases, even be able to rent prison places abroad, says C leader Anna-Karin Hatt, to SVT News.
To get the proposal through the Riksdag, however, a vote with a qualified majority is required, and then the Social Democrats must also say yes.
In this situation, where it is so clear that we need to get more prison places, I think all political parties should be prepared to reconsider previous positions, says Anna-Karin Hatt, to SVT.
