Washington's goalkeeper Logan Thompson had to work hard during the night against Wednesday, Swedish time. The opponents Carolina fed a total of 94 shots towards his goal, of which 33 reached him. Thompson saved 31 – but two slipped in.
We were everywhere and we needed to send everything we had against them, says Carolina's goal scorer Jaccob Slavin after the match.
That mentality paid off.
Carolina defended themselves effectively and only allowed 14 shots on their own goal – an unusual situation for top team Washington.
We didn't play our usual hockey style. We let them dictate the game, says Washington forward Dylan Strome.
The win means that Carolina now leads the match series, which is played in best of seven, with 1–0.
Leading their match series is also Edmonton, which, after an impressive recovery, from 0–2, beat Vegas with 4–2. Swedish William Karlsson stood for an assist in one of Vegas' goals.
