The meeting between countries in South and North America was scheduled for December but has now been postponed until next year, the Dominican Republic's foreign ministry said. The decision was made after dialogue with participating countries, including the United States.
"We support the decision to postpone the meeting and will continue to work with the Dominican Republic and other countries in the region to achieve a productive meeting in 2026," writes US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on X.
The tone has been high, especially between the United States and Venezuela, since the United States attacked what it claims are "drug boats" off the coast of Venezuela, among other places.
A US military ship is also in Trinidad and Tobago for joint exercises in the area off Venezuela. The exercise has been condemned by Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who calls it “a provocation.”
Donald Trump recently gave the CIA the go-ahead to carry out covert operations inside Venezuela, part of the US's attempt to put pressure on Maduro.
