The alarm came just after 18, local time. During a parade in the city where thousands of football fans celebrated Liverpool's victory in the past season's Premier League, a car drove into a crowd of people.

An eyewitness tells Sky News that she saw when the car drove into the crowd of people.

Then people started rushing after the driver and they tried to smash the car. The police did everything to block and drive away people, she tells the TV channel.

Similar stories come from a long line of witnesses. And in the quarters around the site, several restaurants have opened their doors for lightly injured who got bandaged there, writes The Guardian.

Of the injured who were taken to hospital, two people have serious injuries, one of them is a child, the police report.

One arrested

”We can confirm that the arrested is a 53-year-old white British man from Liverpool”, the police announced earlier on Monday evening.

The police do not suspect that anyone else was involved, or that the incident is terror-related.

It is unclear whether the driver drove into the crowd on purpose and the police ask the public not to spread unconfirmed rumors.

At the same time, the hospitals in the city ask relatives of possibly injured not to contact them. Those affected will be informed.

”Help us handle this incident in the best way by not calling our switchboards", writes the central healthcare system NHS.

Large number of people

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the incident is “terrible".

I want to thank the police and rescue services for their rapid and ongoing efforts after this shocking incident, says Starmer according to BBC.

Football club Liverpool writes in a statement on its website that it gives its full support to the rescue services and local authorities.

”Our thoughts and prayers go to those who have been affected by this serious incident.”

According to local politicians, nearly a million people were on the streets where the parade went by, reports Sky News.

There is no information that any Swede has been injured, according to the Foreign Ministry.

The incident revives old wounds in Liverpool, and is one of the darkest days in the club's history since the Hillsborough disaster in Sheffield on April 15, 1989, when 96 Liverpool supporters died.
