"He has been brought ashore. We can confirm that he is a Chinese citizen," says the Coast Guard's press officer Mattias Lindholm to TT.
The master is under arrest on suspicion of using a false document, a felony. He is also suspected of violating the Maritime Act regarding lack of seaworthiness, but is not under arrest for this offense.
"But the suspicion remains," says Lindholm.
"Interrogations with the detainee will be held during the day and contacts with other authorities and countries have been initiated," says senior prosecutor Adrien Combier-Hogg in a press release.
The tanker Jin Hui was boarded at 2 p.m. on Sunday south of Trelleborg in Swedish territorial waters.
According to Carl-Oskar Bohlin (M), Minister of Civil Defense, the ship is suspected of being part of the Russian so-called shadow fleet and is on the EU, UK and Ukraine's sanctions lists.
The boarding was the fifth of its kind in recent months. The Coast Guard has previously stated that there is a constant exchange of information with other countries and that vessels that can be described as part of the shadow fleet have "increased in scope" in recent years.
Corrected: In a previous version there was an inaccuracy regarding what the commander is being held for.
