It has been an unusually intense fire month in May in the provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.
A first smoke cloud crossed the Atlantic and passed at high altitude over Greece and the eastern Mediterranean in mid-May, which was observed via satellite, according to Copernicus.
A second, larger, smoke cloud reached northwestern Europe on June 1.
Although the smoke locally in Canada has deteriorated air quality, it is not expected to have a major negative impact on Europe since the smoke is so high up.
"That we can observe the smoke in Europe reflects the extent of the fires and the effects they have had in Manitoba and Saskatchewan", says researcher Mark Parrington at Copernicus in a press release.
