The national anthem "O Canada" has rarely been met with such jubilation as when Toronto Raptors hosted LA Clippers in the North American basketball league.
And USA's "The Star-spangled banner" has rarely been booed out so loudly, reports CBC.
The Canadian basketball audience thus followed the verbal protest of hockey fans against the USA when Ottawa hosted Minnesota on Saturday evening.
And when Vancouver hosted Detroit on Sunday in the NHL, the Canadian home audience did the same as the fans in Ottawa – booing during the American national anthem and clapping and cheering when it was over, and then singing along to "O Canada".
The fans are booing at USA's – and Donald Trump's – trade tariffs, which will be introduced on Tuesday. Goods from Canada and Mexico will then be subject to a 25 percent tariff. A 10 percent tariff will be imposed on goods from China, a rate that also applies to energy imports from Canada.
Normally, we stand up during both national anthems. I took off my cap out of respect for the USA's national anthem, but today we feel a little bitterness, says Toronto Raptors supporter Joseph Chua to the news agency AP.
Two who have ended up in the firing line during the booing are the two teenage singers Kyra Daniel and Mandia Nantsios, who sang in Toronto and Ottawa.
Both, however, were met with jubilation and applause when they finished singing, as proof that it was not directed at them.
"Thanks to everyone who has reached out to tell me. I was warned," writes Mandia Nantsios on Instagram, writes Ottawa Citizen.
