The current chair country, Canada, has invited the foreign ministers of the other G7 countries for three days of talks in the province of Quebec.
The G7 countries, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the USA, which previously had a united front, have been shaken since Donald Trump returned as the President of the USA, where he has both held direct talks with Russia and imposed tariffs on his allies.
Prior to the meeting, Canada's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly met her American counterpart Marco Rubio. He is the highest-ranking politician to visit the country since Donald Trump called Canada the USA's "51st state".
Joly said that she hopes the countries will find ways to "continue supporting Ukraine as they face Russia's illegal aggression".
We all want to see a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, she says.
At the same time, Rubio said that he wants to see the G7 countries avoid "antagonistic" language towards Russia, as he believes it hinders diplomacy that can end the war.
Joly also said that she will bring up Trump's tariffs "in every single meeting", while Rubio expects his counterparts to set aside trade policy to discuss common goals.
Besides Ukraine, the talks will also focus on, among other things, China and the Middle East.
