Last Saturday, a female ambulance nurse in her 45s was attacked and killed during an emergency call to Harmånger in Nordanstig municipality, just north of Hudiksvall.
At a press conference the day after, the head of operations at the ambulance service at Hudiksvall Hospital, Liselott Sjöqvist, says that the situation did not appear threatening in advance.
The emergency operator assessed the call as a priority 3. An ambulance was assigned to the task, arrived at the address and at some point during that time, the alarm button was pressed, says Liselott Sjöqvist.
Priority 3 is low priority for an ambulance emergency call.
Been there before
The attacked ambulance nurse was taken to the emergency room in Hudiksvall, but her life could not be saved.
The other employee in the ambulance, who tried to save her colleague's life, is physically unharmed but is not feeling well and is receiving crisis support for post-traumatic stress.
A violent situation is said to have occurred when the ambulance responded to the address days before the incident, according to information in several media outlets.
I can only confirm that we have been to the address before and we have also filed a work injury report, says Liselott Sjöqvist.
Do not want to go to work
Sjöqvist – clearly shaken and with a trembling voice – says that many employees now do not want to go to work, that they are afraid or are in mourning, and thanks nearby regions that have provided personnel.
The press conference was also attended by Susanna Björklund, deputy health and medical care director in Gävleborg. She says that the grief is great and that the region's focus is on taking care of employees and colleagues.
The incident has been reported to the Work Environment Authority and the ambulance's routines will be analyzed in detail together with the union and other actors.
No one should have to risk their life at their workplace, says Björklund.
A minute of silence will be held in connection with the regional council in Bollnäs on Wednesday.
