California's support of over 2.5 billion dollars, approximately 27.5 billion kronor, is intended for efforts related to evacuations, temporary housing, and emergency measures to remove toxic materials.
The decision was made across party lines and is to be approved by Governor Gavin Newsom, who has been instrumental in drafting the proposal.
In addition to state support, California has previously been promised federal support from Washington DC. However, the newly elected President Donald Trump is threatening to withdraw the support.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump stated that the state's efforts to preserve water environments for endangered fish must be discontinued. He also claimed that environmental measures had resulted in a lack of water in fire departments' water tanks – which has been proven to be an incorrect statement.
However, Trump is sticking to his accusation:
I don't think we should give California anything until they let the water flow downstream, he said to Fox Channel's Sean Hannity.
Donald Trump is expected to visit the fire-stricken areas soon, possibly as early as Friday. However, Democrat Newsom has not yet received an invitation to meet with the President, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The fires, which broke out on January 7, have completely destroyed large areas, primarily in Pacific Palisades and Eaton in northern Los Angeles. At least 28 people have died in the fires.
