The large demonstration was carried out after major clashes on Sunday, when protesters tried to stop a few hundred Orthodox who volunteered for military service, leading to clashes with police.
Things also got chaotic on Tuesday, when demonstrators lit fires on the streets of Jerusalem and attacked journalists who were reporting on the protest, writes The Times of Israel.
In the evening, a bus drove into a large group of protesters. One young man was killed and three were injured when the bus driver, according to his own account, tried to drive away, writes the Jerusalem Post. The driver was arrested at the scene.
Most Jewish men and women in Israel must complete mandatory military service at the age of 18. But the ultra-Orthodox have previously been granted exemptions for full-time studies in religious seminaries - which has been a source of criticism from the more secular population.
In mid-December, hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews clashed with police in Jerusalem in protest against what was reported to be the arrest of a man who resisted military service.
