West African Burkina Faso has adopted a law that prohibits homosexuality and imposes penalties of up to five years in prison.
Homosexuality is illegal in about 30 African countries but was not prohibited in Burkina Faso before the military junta took power in the country through a coup in the autumn of 2022.
The law prescribes a prison sentence of between two and five years as well as fines, says Justice Minister Edasso Rodrigue Bayala to the state television company RTB.
