The summer begins with one of Sweden's most expensive festivals - Sweden Rock, where, for example, Iron Maiden, Volbeat and Magnus Uggla will play. A ticket there costs at least 3,998 kronor for all days. Later in August, the Way Out West festival awaits, with Zara Larsson, The Cure and Gorillaz on stage, among others. It ends up at the top of the price list this year with a day pass for at least 1,895 kronor.
To keep control of your spending, planning is key, according to music writer Jesper Robild, who gives his budget tips for the festival summer.
It's important to eat and drink cheaply. If you're at a city festival like Way Out West, you can eat in town. But if you're at a festival like Roskilde or Sweden Rock, where there's not much in the immediate area, you can bring a makeshift kitchen or prepare sandwiches, he says.
For those who want to drink alcohol, it's cheapest to bring your own to drink before entering the site. Jesper Robild also emphasizes the importance of bringing your own water bottle to fill up.
Accommodation a challenge
Planning your trip to and from the festival well in advance is another effective way to keep costs down.
Getting there can also be expensive. You can carpool or try to book a train ticket well in advance, he says.
How you stay also plays a big role. Hotels can often cost as much, if not more, than the festival itself. Therefore, Robild says, it's a great advantage if you have the opportunity to camp.
Expensive clothes and merchandise
Inside the festival area, more than just food and drinks are sold. Merchandise can also be an expensive affair. It is often more expensive at the festival than if you order online.
They may have more exclusive stuff. But it costs a lot of money, so the tip is not to do it, he says.
For those who want to get away really cheap, many festivals also offer free admission in exchange for volunteering. For example, you can help build or tear down the festival area, or staff tents and stations during the festival.
