Brynäs Rallies Past Malmö After Controversial Penalty in Playoffs

Malmö took the lead after a disputed penalty. But Brynäs could turn it around – and take a 2–0 lead in the quarterfinal series against the Skåne team. We find a way to win, which has been our strength all season, says Anton Rödin in TV4 after the 4–2 win.

The series superior from Gävle fell behind early after a situation that stirred up emotions in the second quarterfinal match in the SM playoffs in ice hockey.

Henrik Haapala in Malmö got free, but Brynäs defender Axel Andersson seemed to clear from behind. However, according to the referee pair, it was not a clean play, and a penalty was awarded.

I feel like I'm catching up, and want to push before he gets a shot off. Don't think I'm up against hands. So I don't think it should be a penalty, says Brynäs Axel Andersson in TV4.

Goalkeeper Chaos

But a penalty it was – and Robin Hanzl was as safe as could be when he scored 1–0.

That lead, however, would not be maintained until the period break.

During a cautious Malmö penalty, Brynäs sent the puck forward in front of the goal, and Miks Indrasis steered in the equalizer behind Oskar Blomgren in the Malmö goal.

It was Blomgren who was involved in the match's other headline – albeit before the face-off.

For in the lineup, Malmö started Daniel Marmelind as the starting goalkeeper. But when they went out on the ice for warm-up, he was not there. Instead, the relatively inexperienced Blomgren guarded the goal for the visitors. The team's intended first goalkeeper, Marek Langhamer, has been injured since the first eighth-final against Rögle. And Marmelind was out in the first meeting with Brynäs on Thursday.

"Fight for 60 minutes"

In the second period, Victor Söderström could score 2–1 in power play. And in the final act, Gävle's giant, Jakob Silfverberg, scored the match-winning goal.

The match ended 4–2, and Brynäs now leads 2–0 in the match series.

Fairly stable performance. We have to fight for 60 minutes here, and not everything goes our way, but we find a way to win, which has been our strength all season, says Anton Rödin in TV4.

In the parallel quarterfinal series up in Norrbotten, Växjö took a lot of penalties again – which was the case in Thursday's first meeting. Luleå could take advantage of that fact and, after three powerplay goals, could pave the way for a 6–2 victory. The Norrbottens also lead their match series 2–0.
