After several years of negotiations, the border problem was resolved through an agreement that facilitates movement between the British territory and the EU country Spain. The agreement, which was reached on Wednesday, is also part of the new start in the relationship between the UK and the EU.
“Today's breakthrough means a practical solution after years of uncertainty,” writes the British Foreign Minister David Lammy in a statement.
EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic notes that the agreement means that “a new chapter in the relationship is being written” in relation to London.
During the previous Conservative British government's rule, negotiations with Spain and the EU were almost completely stalled. The situation changed when Labour took power in London.
Gibraltar's leader Fabian Picardo says he is “pleased” with the agreement and that it means stability for Gibraltar's residents.
Gibraltar is, among other things, an important military base for the UK due to its location by the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
