On Thursday, this year's fourth and last men's major begins. "The Open", better known as British Open, is the world's oldest golf tournament and was arranged for the first time in 1860.

+ The course.

The Open returns to Royal Portrush Golf Club, located on Northern Ireland's north coast. The course, Dunluce Links, has previously hosted the tournament twice – most recently in 2019, when Shane Lowry won in front of a jubilant home crowd.

The course measures 7,381 yards (6,749 meters) and is played as par 71. The weather often becomes the biggest challenge for the players. The wind from the Atlantic can strike at any time, making each round unpredictable. The signature hole is the notorious 16th, “Calamity Corner”, a long par 3 hole over a large ravine where even the smallest mistake can be costly.

+ The Swedes.

Swedish eyes are primarily directed at 25-year-old Ludvig Åberg, who continues to impress on the world scene. Åberg is now making his second The Open and expectations are high. He has already established himself as one of the world's top golfers and enters the tournament as ninth in the world rankings.

Henrik Stenson's victory in The Open in 2016 at Royal Troon is still one of the greatest moments in Swedish golf history. Then, Stenson became the first Swedish male golfer to win a major and was awarded the bragdguldet.

Now, the 49-year-old will play again in the British Open with a new-old caddie, Fanny Sunesson. Between 2006 and 2011, Sunesson was Stenson's full-time caddie.

Other Swedes participating are: Sebastian Söderberg, Jesper Svensson, and Jesper Sandborg.

+ The favorites in the starting field.

World number one Scottie Scheffler enters as the favorite and is a name that many have as the pre-tournament winner. Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy receives enormous support from the home crowd and reigning champion Xander Schauffele is also a contender, even if his season has been up and down.

+ The start times.

Stenson begins his first round at 09.47, on Thursday. Åberg tees off at 15.59. Söderberg at 09.47, Sandborg at 12.04, Svensson at 12.47. Other notable times, 10.58: Schauffele, 11.09: Scheffler, 16.10: McIlroy.
