Singer Mireille Mathieu and Marine Le Pen, former party leader of the right-wing populist National Rally, bid a final farewell to film star Brigitte Bardot at the funeral in Saint-Tropez.

The funeral was held at the Catholic Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption where 79-year-old Mireille Mathieu sang "Panis angelicus" a cappella in a high, strong voice.

Only invited guests were allowed into the church, but those outside were able to follow the funeral on large screens.

French opera singer Vincent Niclo performed "Ave Maria". Music from Jean-Luc Godard's film "Contempt", in which Brigitte Bardot played one of the leading roles, was also played in the church.

The Gipsy Kings accompanied the coffin with guitars and also walked behind the car during the procession to a cemetery overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Among the dead is Bardot's ex-husband, Roger Vadim, who directed her breakthrough film, "And God Created Woman" (1956).

Bardot's many admirers were invited to attend a public tribute nearby, and the city's streets were lined with hundreds of people who followed the funeral from a distance. Many had brought their dogs.

Brigitte Bardot died of cancer, her husband Bernard d'Ormale told the newspaper Paris Match.

The film icon retired from the film world in 1973 to dedicate herself to animal rights. She was also noted for her far-right views.

Correction: Marine Le Pen is a former party leader.
